Her parents are Jim O'Grady who is a financial adviser and Jan O'Grady. She grew up in Wheaton, Illinois, and completed her studies at Wheaton North High School in the year 1981. Models appeared in commercials for a time before relocating into Los Angeles. O'Grady started her career by modelling in Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She began her career on the screen with the romantic drama Having a Baby in 1988. She later played a regular role in the ABC comedy China Beach alongside Dana Delany. The actress has also appeared as a guest and appeared on independent movies and TV shows. Donna Abandando, her first significant role in the ABC cop drama NYPD Blue was her character. O'Grady was the team's big-haired secretary of ABC's NYPD Blue from 1993 until 1996. Every year, she received Emmy Award nods for Outstanding actress in a Drama Series.
